leeny’s notes #08 ~ Blog-a-thon-a-go-go
Back again.
Yes it wasn’t that long ago when I did the last update, but a couple of things have come up in short order.
The 24hour Vancouver Blogathon 2008 will be taking place this weekend. I have decided that I will be joining the fray and blog every 30minutes for 24hours. Thats a whopping 48 posts in one day. From 5am Saturday July 26th till 5am Sunday July 27th yours truly will be pounding back the coffee and try to develop a mean case of Carpal tunnel syndrome.
Why would I be doing this to myself?
To test my limits and to raise money for a good cause.
What’s the cause?
My charity of choice is the CKNW’s Orphan’s fund. I swear I was listening to our local Talk radio station Inutero, and over the years have grown to admire this small charity for their work in helping special needs children every day of the year. more info at the end of this post.
How can you help me, Help the children?
If you wish to pledge my film related blogging efforts please send an email to Blogathon [at] gmail [dot] com.
Please include your name, any messages of encouragement, and amount you would like to donate to this great cause. At the end of the weekend you will be contact as how to donate directly to the CKNW’s Orphan;s fund.
Will I be doing this alone?
Heck no, there will be 14 intrepid groups that will be challenging their Keyboards to a pounding they won’t soon to forget! These blogoholics are Rebecca Bollwitt, Tania Morrison, Raul, Shane Gibson, Karen Hamilton, Ayeza Garcia, Isabella Mori, Danny Dang, Mehnaz Thawer, Barbara Doduk, Chris Richardson, Colleen Vince, and Duane Storey. I encourage you to check out these other fun loving typists.

“Where the Dollars Go
The Picnic has become a day at Playland for many elementary school children, during which some 3,000 children with challenges, some confined to hospital beds, community homes and other institutions are given free run of all the rides, are sumptuously fed and royally entertained.
In excess of $200,000 a year is provided to camping organizations to provide fees for special needs children whose parents cannot afford to send them to camp. Applications must be made to camping organizations.
We make funds available for needed equipment and services for children. Anything from a specially adapted tricycle for a spina bifida child, to emergency dental work for a child in pain or buying a computer for a child who is bedridden. We have funded horseback riding lessons for muscular dystrophy children, purchased hearing aids, eyeglasses & electric sports wheelchairs funded speech and language therapy, mentioning only a few of the services we provide.
We respond to appeals from charities and organizations whose commitment is to work for and with special needs children.
In 2007 we funded over $100,000 to Lower mainland hospitals for their infant care nurseries to purchase critically needed equipment; incubators, fetal monitoring devices.
Over $100,000 a year is provided to individuals attending specialized schools, devoted to working with children diagnosed with learning difficulties.
One hundred thousand dollars was provided Children’s Hospital to partially equip a research lab to study inflammatory bowel and crone’s disease in children.
An endowment was established to fund a UBC professor heading up research into the immunology of children’s diseases.
Endowments have been established at most community colleges, BCIT and the Open Learning Agency to provide bursaries for single parent students. Applications are made to the schools.
An endowment fund was established at SFU to provide one scholarship per year for a student from an income assistance background. It pays 100% of the cost of tuition, books, housing and other expenses for up to four years.
Each year a grant is provided to an organization whose sole purpose is to assist “youth at risk” –.Administered by the Orphans’ Fund interest from the Josiah Vandreil Fund has supported youth for the past decade. “
WHAT IS IT? (2005)
SINGLE MOST
UNIQUE FILM I’VE SEEN!
SUCH MADNESS
Directed by: Crispin Glover
Written by: Crispin Glover
Starring: Crispin Glover, Fairuza Balk, Michael Blevis,
Rikky Wittman, John Insinna, Kelly Swiderski, Lisa Fusco,
Steven C. Stewart, Robin Adams, Cheryl Brown
Additional Syllables: This film is an event, not a movie. Crispin Glover travels the globe with his one copy of the film showing it to packed Art Houses. Its not just the movie either. He presents a slide show of the books he has published. Readings have been polished to become performances worthy of their own billing. An hour of crispin bizarre delivery of his bizarre thoughts really put you in the proper state of mind for the film. “What is it?”, good question. The tagline for the film is “Being the adventures of a young man whose principle interests are
snails, salt, a pipe, and how to get home. As tormented by an
hubristic, racist inner psyche.” Yep…Madness! The cast is made up predominatley with people that have Dow Syndrome, and naked monkey women. If you like Surrealism, or just generally the pecular appeals to you, keep you eyes out for the next time Crispin Glover comes to your town. He also stayed for a very interesting Q&A.
Rating: Hahahaha.. How do you give a rating to a film
thats this bizzarre? Well you don’t! I couldn’t look away.
I think I loved it, and hated it at the exact same time.

THE DARK KNIGHT (2008)
SACRIFICE
FOR THE GOOD OF ALL
LIKED THE FILM
Directed by: Christopher Nolan
Written by: Jonathan Nolan, Christopher Nolan
Starring: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger,
Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Michael Caine
Additional Syllables: I really wish I liked this film more. From the almost constant praise for this film,I have been reading, I feel I missed out on the “Dark Knight” experience. It looked great, Ledger was great, the story was good… Yet I just didn’t seem to be drawn into the film. The films I truely love all have one thing in common, and thats, I never seem to be aware I was watching a film. I just didn’t get that out of TDK. It a Shame!

JACK BROOKS: MONSTER SLAYER (2008)
NEW FORM OF
ANGER MANAGEMENT
FUN HORROR
Directed by: Jon Knautz
Written by: John Ainslie
Starring: Trevor Matthews, Robert Englund, Rachel Skarsten
Additional Syllables: In recent years the world of the creature feature has been in steep decline. So I am particularly happy to see this Canadian film enter into the cinematic fray. Jon Knautz, in his first feature film, has done a great job at handling the fine line of horror / comedy. Trevor Mathews makes a great anti-hero as Jack Brooks, but the movie was stolen by the fantastic performance by Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger) as the Professor. If I was to have any complaints about the film, It would have to be over some of the dialogue. At times I felt the lines were a little on the forced side. This being a fun little horror film, that wasn’t that big of a draw back.
Overall a great first film for Jon Knautz, and I am hoping to see both Jon and Trevor back in sequels … please!

“200th review”
leeny’s notes #07 - FREE MOVIE PASSES
It’s been a while since I did a update on the state of the haiku blog. Everything is running surprisingly good at the moment, but I will be tempting fate in the near future with an upgrade to Wordpress 2.6. Last time I did a major update a few little things needed sorted out, but nothing major. Here’s hoping the next upgrade will go as smoothly.
So a few things are going on in the immediate future. The first being, a press screening for the film Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer is taking place Wednesday morning. A representative of Jigsaw Communications has very generously given 353 Review three sets of advance screening passes for Jack Brooks (more farther down the page). In addition to the passes, they are also setting up an email interview with Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger). So stay tuned for that in the future.
My review for Jack Brooks will also be a bit of a milestone. It will be my 200th review done in a Haiku format. When I started this site, I had a goal of doing at least 365 reviews in a year. I am on track to making that goal, and even exceed it. Yaa me!
Some of my readers may have heard that I was attempting a 48hours movie marathon on the August long weekend to raise money for my favorite charity. Well stuff happens, and I have been asked to not do the marathon as a fundraiser. The concerns of the charity were valid (if perhaps a little weak), so I am no longer going to be doing the fundraiser. I will still be attempting the 48 hours of madness… Just, now I get to pick the films! It will still be live blogged, and most likely web cam enabled (depending on the spotty internet connection).
But enough of all that stuff.. You’ve read through my blatherings for one reason only.
