  1. Easily the most boring movie I have ever seen, I lasted two three quarters of the way through and could bear it no longer as the camera trekked across the boat mimicking the interminable opening shot. It was if the director was daring me to leave. It’s dreariness practically a satire on perceptions East European cinema

  2. I fall into the camp who regard Béla Tarr as a visionary genius. While this film may not be his best, it is nonetheless the wok of a genuine artist and that it is also demanding from the audience shouldn’t put people off. Those brought up on the Hollywood or MTV view of the world, will struggle with this film, Jonathan clearly does. But if you want to experience cinema as art, then this is a fantastic film.

I think Bela Tarr is great at getting beautiful b&w shots. That said, Man from London was just about the dullest film i’ve ever attempt to sit through, and I have sat through a lot of tedious film.
If Tarr’s point was to make people fall asleep during the film, or get people to leave before the half way point….success. I saw this at the Vancouver Film Fest, a crowd that is well tolerant of non-hollywoood fare, and witnessed a whole lot of people leaving the theatre, until I too was forced to bail.
The movie was slower than slow, & I have a high tolerance for slow moving film. It was the first film I ever walked out off.

  4. correction, This was the first film I ever walked out of that didn’t involve shaky cam / Motion sickness.
