THE DARK KNIGHT (2008)

SACRIFICE
FOR THE GOOD OF ALL
LIKED THE FILM

Directed by: Christopher Nolan
Written by: Jonathan Nolan, Christopher Nolan
Starring: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger,
Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Michael Caine
Additional Syllables: I really wish I liked this film more. From the almost constant praise for this film,I have been reading, I feel I missed out on the “Dark Knight” experience. It looked great, Ledger was great, the story was good… Yet I just didn’t seem to be drawn into the film. The films I truely love all have one thing in common, and thats, I never seem to be aware I was watching a film. I just didn’t get that out of TDK. It a Shame!

Did you think Ledger’s performance was Oscar worthy?

  1. Good old Vulcan philosophy there: The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few…or the one.

  2. I agree with you for the most part even though I thought the movie was worthy of an 8 out of 10. I think this movie is getting overhyped. It is a good movie and will probably be one of the best movies of the year, but some people are saying the the Dark Knight is one of the best movies ever which it isn’t. I don’t know exactly what it was but the movie was missing something that kept it from being great. The only thing I agree with the hype for the movie is regarding Heath Ledger’s performance. I thought his Joker was one of the best villains I have ever seen in a movie. I think he is definently worthy of the Oscar.

  3. Thanks for stopping by Eric.

Ledgers Joker was geniunely a scary guy. This makes him unique in the Batman franchise, as I thought the bad guys were too campy to be effective. Loved the scene with the Joker outside of the hospital…LOL

  4. The more I think about this film, the more I just don’t get the hype. Its been a few days since I saw the film, and the thing that is really sticking in my head, is the absolutely horrible editing. The scene with Bruce and Alfred in the Bat Garage talking back in forth was brutal! I liked it, but the critical praise this film is recieving is nuts!

Funny you should mention that, it is outranking The Godfather as the best movie ever made on IMDb as I write this…

  6. I absolutely disagree that this is one of the best films ever. However, it is easily the best big studio/franchise/blockbuster movie I can recall. If you consider the (artistic) limitations of working with a huge budget and huge expectations, The Dark Night succeeds on so many levels and sets the bar three notches higher for any subsequent blockbusters. It is visceral and enthralling; full of top-notch performances by a cast whose only fault lies in its embarassment of riches.
The pre-release hype accorded to Heath Ledger is valid. In fact, I was not expecting his performance to be as riveting and nuanced as it was. Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman are reliably excellent in their roles. The one performance that I feel is not being given its due is Christian Bale’s Batman-here is a character that is conflicted and besieged more than any other character in this story, but manages the weight of this responsibility with a cheeky grace and aplomb. Is it just me or are Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale making obtuse American Psycho references with the dramatic, excessive and humorous entrances of Bruce Wayne with an ever-changing roster of hotties? I think it happens far too often and consistently to be accidental.
Aaron Eckhart, playing D.A. Harvey Dent, as with every role I have seen him play, is note-perfect, subtle and intense.
Of course there are a host of incredibly complex implausibilities in the plot. Of course there are sometimes too many things going on. The playbook of a big-budget blow-it-all-up blockbuster is built on the acceptance of inconsistencies as long as they ring true to the overall feel of the plot movement and the essence of the characters. I feel The Dark Knight’s flaws fit well within this mulligan and I endorse this film as the act that every subsequent summer blockbuster will have to follow.

  7. I would recommend this film to just about everyone I know. I did enjoy the film. That said, I’ll never get the best film ever crowd. Best comic/superhero film…That I could see. Best film of 2008, not in my books, but I can understand why someone else might list it that high….but best film ever? No Way
